General Policies

Test Format and Time Limits

  • The 2026 testing windows are November 9 to 13 and November 16 to 20, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day. All registered participants must complete their test during one of these windows and within the designated hours.
  • Each knowledge test includes 50 questions (multiple choice and true/false). Participants have 30 minutes to complete the test.
  • During the Virginia FCCLA Knowledge Quest tests, participants must remain on the test window at all times. A “move away” tracking feature monitors and logs every instance of navigating away (for example, clicking to another browser tab or application). Because leaving the test window is tracked, multiple instances may be flagged as academic dishonesty.

Participation in Multiple Events

Participants may register for more than one knowledge test if they are interested in those topics. The registration fee is charged per test. Participants may complete Virginia’s Knowledge Quest Online Testing Competition in the fall and may also enter a STAR Event at the State Leadership & Recognition Conference in the spring.

Americans With Disabilities Act

Please provide a copy of the accommodations page if any student participating in the knowledge tests is a person with a disability and desires assistive services or other accommodations. Submit it to Laura.Short@VirginiaFCCLA.org at least one week prior to the start of the testing window.

Device and Testing Requirements

  • Acceptable devices: laptops or desktop computers, and tablets such as Chromebooks and iPads.
  • Prohibited devices: cell phones may not be used for taking any of the knowledge tests.
  • Technical specifications (check with your school’s IT department for resolutions to any issues): reliable internet access is required for each device/participant; the device must be capable of accessing the online testing platform; and the device must have a compatible web browser installed (for example, Microsoft Edge, Safari, Mozilla Firefox, or Google Chrome).

Additional Policies

  • Only the registered student member may take the test, to be verified by the chapter adviser.
  • Blank paper and a pencil/pen for calculations are allowed for all tests.
  • If a participant has a question about a test item, the proctor can repeat the question for the student but cannot help the student come up with the answer.
  • Participants may not bring any reference materials for use during the testing session.
  • Once participants have logged on to the testing platform, they must not leave the testing window until they have submitted their test.
  • All unfinished answers will be scored as incorrect.
  • Each test has a 30-minute time limit. A timer is visible on the screen in the upper right corner once the participant starts the test.

Awards and Recognition

  • The Top 10 in each knowledge test and level will be recognized through various Virginia FCCLA media channels.
  • A customizable certificate is available in the 2026 Fall Knowledge Quest Guide and can be printed at the local level for all participants from the chapter.
  • The Top 10 will also be recognized at the Closing Session of the State Leadership & Recognition Conference, on screen and on stage. The Top 3 will receive a framed certificate, and a special photo backdrop area will be provided at the conference.
  • Participation in recognition at the state conference requires paid registration for the conference.

Determination of Winners

  • The online testing platform is designed to provide a fair and standardized testing environment for all participants.
  • Each participant’s score is based on the number of correct answers within the time limit. All unfinished or incorrect answers are scored as incorrect.
  • The test is timed, and participants must complete it within the allotted time.
  • The participant with the highest score is the winner for each test level. If there is a tie, the participant who completed the test in the shortest amount of time is the winner.
